Doing Things You Never Planned On
Most people grow up wanting to be one thing or another. They go to college to be whatever they’ve dreamed of for the past 10 years, and think little about other possibilities. The reality is - you most likely will NOT end up doing what you spent 4+ years in college preparing for. I know, scary, but lets face the truth, unless you are at the top of your game, no one but you really cares what...

Free Service > Paid Service
Here is something I would put into the ‘what not to do’ category of business. Taking a service that was primarily free from the beginning, getting a huge user base, and then change the rules by making the users start to pay for the service. This is exactly the direction the online video site Hulu is heading into 2010.
To quote Chase Carey, Deputy Chairman of News. Corps (co-owners...

Diary of an Intern #1 - A Digital World
In an attempt to spread the light on the future generation of the employment force, I’ve decided to keep a loose diary on my experiences/thoughts of the professional world (namely marketing, advertising, and PR related). This is the first entry.
Internships are a no brainer. Especially if you are still a college student. They provide not just job experience, but also insight into the real...

Ralph Lauren Fail.
This is rather disgusting. This ridiculous photoshopped image is literally the saddest thing I’ve ever seen. I can’t tell if it is just bad photoshopping skills on the artists part, or if the executives actually thought this was a good idea. Either way, fail on their part. In fact, I hope whoever gave the ok for this not only gets fired, but starves to death after getting fired.

10 Best Things We'll Say to Our Grandkids
1. Back in my day, we only needed 140 characters.
2. There used to be so much snow up here, you could strap a board to your feet and slide all the way down.
3. Televised contests gave cash prizes to whoever could store the most data in their head.
4. Well, the screens were bigger, but they only showed the movies at certain times of day.
5. We all had one, but nobody actually used it. Come to...

The End of Branding?
Currently, I’ve been reading the book Adland: Searching for the Meaning of Life on a Branded Planet by Creative Director James Othmer. One of the most interesting sections thus far has been his account of a converstation he had with Rick Webb, Co-Founder ofThe Barbarian Group in Boston.
In this conversation, they discuss the end of branding. And I feel they are spot on. In the past...

Mag.ma
Ok, so there are a lot of video sites on the web right now. Some are informational, others are pretty funny, and well - most of the suck. That, and having to switch back and forth between user heavy Youtube, art driven Vimeo, and commercial bank Hulu, finding the gems in the online video world can be slightly frustrating.
Enter Mag.ma
I recently discovered this site and was surprised it...

Strategy Vs. Creativity
I’m still young in my career, and I obviously have a lot to learn. However, one of the major disputes I’ve been having with myself, is where strategy starts and where creativity ends (or vice versa). There is no doubt that strategy in advertising and marketing is important. But at what point do professionals rely to much on strategy and not spend enough time on the creative process.

A very inspiring and emotional piece. Sunday Morning by Michael McCabe. I love videos with imagery like this.
iPhone Recession Case by Case-Mate
I thought this was cool. It also features a pretty sweet FAQ section as well, just in case you didn’t know the dynamics of cardboard.

What Web Browser Are You?
At some point in your life, you probably have had someone say to you (while you are on the computer), “OMG, you still use Internet Explorer?” Luckily for everyone, IE is a dying breed. Still, some people put little thought into what web browser they use, and have little knowledge on how choosing the right web browser can actually increase productivity. Google has thought of this...

Marketing Yourself Through Social Media
In the past week or so, I have dived head first into the world of social media, something that I was somewhat sitting calmly on the sidelines with previously. On one hand, you don’t want to seem like you are trying to gain attention to yourself, and on the other, you want to distinguish yourself and be noticed for your abilities and talents. And in todays job market it’s important to...
